Baseball, Softball Teams Win Some, Lose Some

The Golden Eagles baseball team went 2-2 this past weekend, losing its first games in Skyline Conference play.

Men's Baseball Loses Doubleheader Saturday, Takes Huge Wins Sunday

The Golden Eagles baseball team (12-11, 10-2) lost both games of a doubleheader against Old Westbury (9-3, 8-5) Saturday afternoon, but came back Sunday to sweep a doubleheader against Yeshiva (15-2, 15-1).

With the score knotted at two through the first four innings of their first game against Old Westbury, the Golden Eagles’ opponent took a 6-2 lead in the fifth inning by crossing four runs across the plate.

Losing pitcher Jason Dierkes was tagged for six runs over five and a third innings pitched. Old Westbury added another three runs, winning 9-3.

The Golden Eagles seemed poised to take the second game of the doubleheader until a disastrous seventh inning derailed those plans.

Leading 5-2, SJC’s pitching imploded, surrendering six runs, which led to an eventual 8-5 Old Westbury victory.

SJC quickly shook off the tough loss however, as they crushed Yeshiva the following day. The Golden Eagles accumulated 34 hits in the team's lopsided 15-2 and 15-1 victories.

Women’s Softball Has Rough Start to April

Just like the baseball team, the SJC softball team dropped its first two games of April this past weekend. The women lost both games of the doubleheader against Old Westbury (3-2, 9-4) on Saturday afternoon.

The first game came down to the final inning, when Jennifer Jean broke a 2-2 tie with a single that drove in Alex Heaney for the walk-off win.

The women lost the second game of the doubleheader by more of a margin, however, as Old Westbury won 9-4.

SJC returned to the diamond the following day, hosting Mount Saint Mary, trading shutouts with their Skyline opponent.

Mount Saint Mary defeating the Golden Eagles, 5-0 in Game 1. Then in Game 2, SJC shut MSM out, 3-0.

Behind the second game’s stronger performance was freshman Cassie Martinez. She pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits en route to the shutout.

Briarcliffe Takes Home Two

The softball team swept Delaware’s Wesley College in a doubleheader this past weekend, 5-1 and 13-3.

The Seahawks (7-3) were led to victory by strong pitching performances from Ivette Yi-Santiago and Jillian McGovern.

Senior Victoria Bocshert led the offensive charge for Briarcliffe, going 5-for-5 with a two doubles, a triple and walk, pushing four runs across the plate for the Seahawks.
