Briarcliffe Sweeps Doubleheader; SJC Gears up for Skyline Tournament

Sporting results from St. Joseph's College and Briarcliffe from this past week.

The baseball team went 1-4 over its past five games.

The Golden Eagles were heavily outscored by their opponents, 57-24, most of which stemmed from a 25-3 a loss against Western Connecticut on Thursday.

SJC earned its only victory of the week during the second game of the doubleheader against Western Connecticut, 9-8.

The Golden Eagles trailed 8-2 heading into the fifth inning, but cut the deficit to 8-4 in the sixth, before rallying for five runs in the final inning.

Despite the losses, SJC (17-17, 14-2) will more than likely remain with the No. 1 seed in the Skyline Conference Tournament, as all of these were non-conference games.

The Golden Eagles will begin the Skyline Tournament in Farmingdale by playing Old Westbury on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Women’s Softball Stays Even

The SJC women’s softball team won two close games against Briarcliffe on April 20, 9-8 and 1-0. Freshman pitcher Cassie Martinez pitched in Game 2, going seven innings giving up only four hits, while striking out four.

Courtney Frisina drove in the game’s only run, as she followed up Jeanine Rasmussen’s leadoff triple in the third inning with a single, putting SJC up 1-0.

The Golden Eagles lost two games the following day, however. NYU-Poly took both games from SJC in a doubleheader, 7-2 and 11-8.

The team will next play St. Joseph's Brooklyn campus team Friday at 3:30 p.m.

Briarcliffe Softball Player Earns POW Honors

Tori Boschert of was awarded the Player of the Week award from the USCAA this past week. The senior centerfielder went 7-for-9 at the plate with four singles, two home runs and a double. Four of Victoria’s eight RBI for the week stemmed from a grand slam, as well.

Briarcliffe Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader

Briarcliffe (21-14) swept Southern Maine Community College this past Saturday in a doubleheader.  Briarcliffe rallied behind outstanding pitching in both games, none better than Rick Doht’s no-hitter in Game 2. Dought struck out 12 SMCC batters while Chris McCabe, who had 2 RBI, and Dave Hoskin supplied the offense.

Doht was following up teammate Rich Ireland’s impressive performance on the mound in Game 1. Ireland threw a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts. Tommy Butler went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI and Chris McCabe was 2-for-4, driving in two.
