Former Pat-Med Baseball Star Named Duke Co-Captain

Marcus Stroman also selected as preseason All-American by two leading organizations.

Former Patchogue-Medford star pitcher Marcus Stroman was named one of three captains for Duke University’s baseball team for the upcoming season.

A member of Pat-Med High School’s Class of 2009, Stroman was recently named a preseason first team All-American by Baseball America and Perfect Game.

In 2011 Stroman was a starter and reliever for the Blue Devils posting a 3-4 record with a team-best 2.80 ERA. He made eight starts and had nine relief appearances as a sophomore and his 12.64 strikeouts per nine innings were second in the nation.  In 64.1 innings Stroman had a team-leading 90 strikeouts.

In the summer of 2011, he was a member of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, the first player in Duke history to make the team. Serving as Team USA’s closer, he pitched 8.1 scoreless innings in seven appearances and was 4-for-4 in save opportunities. He fanned 17 of the 27 batters he faced, walking only one.

In high school, he was named Louisville Slugger’s Player of the Year for New York as a senior, won the Paul Gibson Award as Long Island’s top pitcher and as a junior won the Yastrzemski Award as the top player in Suffolk County.

In 2009 the Washington Nationals drafted Stroman in the 18th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft.
