St. Joseph's Lose in Championship Game; Briarcliffe Women Receive Bid

The Golden Eagles are defeated by Purchase Saturday night, just short of the Skyline title.

Purchase Ends St. Joseph’s Season Once Again

The Golden Eagles men’s basketball team advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship this past weekend, but much like last year, they fell to Purchase, 81-66, Saturday night, just short of the title.

St. Joseph’s, the third seed in the tournament, cruised by No. 6 Mount Saint Vincent, 68-60, earlier in the week, before defeating No. 2 Mount Saint Mary Thursday night in overtime in a nail-biting finish, 78-75.

The Golden Eagles impressive season ended two nights later, however, at the hands of top-seeded Purchase. The men split the season series with their Skyline rival heading into the finals, winning a game apiece.

According to the St. Joseph’s website, the Golden Eagles now await the decision of the NCAA Selection Committee for a bid to the NCAA Div. III tournament or a bid to the ECAC Metro Tournament.

Briarcliffe To Play in USCAA National Championship

The women’s basketball team’s impressive season was rewarded with a bid to the USCAA National Championship this past week.

The tournament, which begins Tuesday, will be held at Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus. The No. 6 Lady Bulldogs, who were the only team from the metro area selected into the tournament, will open up against the No. 11 Penn State Fayette Roaring Lions.

Behind the stellar play of three Long Island natives, Ifeanyi Ofili (Uniondale), Simone Thomas (Roosevelt High School) and Jessica Little (Wyandanch), the Lady Bulldogs lead the nation in scoring with an average of 72 points-per-game.

If they win their first-round matchup, the Lady Bulldogs will take on No. 3 Robert Morris College on Wednesday.
