Nearby: Cherry Grove Community House Nominated as Historic Site

In 1945 the Cherry Grove Community House was built in Sayville and then floated on a barge to Fire Island.

Now it's being nominated by New York's state Board for Historic Preservation as one of 27 state sites or resources to be added to the New York and National Registers of Historic Places, according to a Newsday report, and local fundraising efforts to renovate the house has raised half of what's needed, about $300,000.

"I think this type of nomination represents how the narrative of history expands to include all these different stories, and it's another layer to understanding the stories that contribute to history," said Alexandra Wolfe, director of preservation services for the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, in the Newsday report.

The Fire Island community is the second gay and lesbian community to be listed on the National Register.
