John Bogack April 18, 2014 at 11:41 am
Joan. After writing my blog I was struck by two things. The changes still gathering steam areRead More sweeping. In a few years even more so than now Patchogue Village will look like and will be a different place. I am not saying that is wrong. These changes are transforming the village. The goal is to make the village a "destination" for recreation. We are fast getting there. Sixteen eateries at present count and that count is only going to up, maybe double in a short time. And maybe that and related other actions are what was needed to move the village from blight to light. But it is a sea change. Two, I was also struck by how little the residents are getting out of this. What we are getting is a trickle down theory that if main street prospers every one will too. I am not so sure. I think neighborhoods need help too. In fact if housing values boomed like main street has then you could say that every boat has been lifted since most people find their wealth in the value of their residential property. But I do not think that has happened and I find it worrisome: a wonderful main street but neglected neighborhoods is not what people want but it seems to be what people are getting. I can only hope at this point that at some point there will be a change in direction boosting neighborhoods as much as businesses have been boosted.
